What is Nervous system "dysregulation"?

Nervous system dysregulation is when tension accumulates in your body that puts you in a state that is persistently stressed, anxious, or tired.  It's kinda like how your car has a "drive" setting and a "park" setting.  Your drive setting helps you get moving and respond to stressful events (like having to prepare for a last minute dinner party). The other setting is “park,” which lets you rest, relax, and recover after a busy day.

When your nervous system is dysregulated, it’s like your car is stuck in “drive” mode. Even when you don’t need to be. Your body thinks you’re still in danger or that something’s wrong, so it keeps you in this high-alert state. You might feel jittery, worried, or unable to rest, even though everything is fine. Over time, this can make you feel really tired, worn out, and even lead to physical problems like trouble sleeping, headaches, hot flashes, weight gain, and stomachaches.

The Missing Piece to Nervous system Healing (Regulation)

We live in a world where stress, burnout, and physical tension run high. If you’re like many women over 40, you’ve probably tried everything—meditation apps, supplements, new diets—just to sleep better or reduce that stubborn weight, but nothing seems to work long-term. Why?

Because you’re treating the symptoms and not the root cause. The truth is, you can’t heal the body without healing the nervous system, and you can’t heal the nervous system without being plugged into the source of peace, love, and healing—God. The deepest form of connection to God is through accepting Jesus Christ into your heart.

Many of you reading this have been through traumas—physical, sexual, verbal, emotional—leaving scars that go far deeper than what’s visible. These experiences can leave your nervous system stuck in a state of survival ("drive") mode, making it nearly impossible to relax, sleep, or feel at ease in your own skin. It’s like trying to recharge a battery without plugging it into the outlet.

This article isn’t just about better sleep—it’s about true healing. Let me share why accepting Christ is the best way to get to the root of your nervous system issues, how that leads to better sleep, less inflammation, and a healthier body overall. I’ve seen it happen countless times—women just like you finding peace they never thought possible by allowing God to take the reins.

But before I get into the why and how, here are some myths that must be disspelled before one can make any headway...

The Myths and Misconceptions Holding You Back

One of the biggest mistakes people make is thinking they can heal their body without addressing the spiritual wounds. You might think that improving your health is all about nutrition and exercise, or maybe it’s just about managing stress and taking better care of yourself. And while those are important, they’re only part of the equation.

Here’s a common myth: “If I can just fix my diet or exercise more, I’ll feel better.” The reality is, without healing your nervous system, no amount of external fixes will truly work. Why? Because when the nervous system is dysregulated, it keeps your body in a constant state of stress. You hold onto tension, fat, and inflammation because your body is stuck in "fight or flight."

Another myth? "I just need to do more self-care." While bubble baths and massages are wonderful, they are temporary. True healing comes from within, and nothing nurtures the soul and nervous system like connecting with God. Scientific research shows that those with a deep sense of spiritual connection often experience lower levels of cortisol, the stress hormone, and improved heart rate variability, both of which are signs of a regulated nervous system.

The deepest and most fulfilling connection to God happens through Jesus Christ. He is the bridge that brings us peace and restoration. When you accept Jesus into your heart, it’s like turning on a switch that allows God’s healing power to flow into every area of your life—your sleep, your metabolism, your mental clarity.

Overcoming Real-Life Challenges

The journey to deepen your connection with God and accept Jesus into your heart isn’t always easy. Trauma can leave deep wounds, and sometimes it feels like there are barriers between you and God. Here are some common challenges and how to overcome them:

  • Feeling Unworthy of God’s Love – Many women who have experienced trauma feel unworthy of God’s love, believing their past disqualifies them from His grace. This is a lie. God’s love is unconditional, and Jesus’ sacrifice is for you. Whenever you feel unworthy, remember Romans 8:38-39, — "Nothing can separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord."
  • Doubt and Fear – Doubt is natural, especially when life has been filled with pain. But faith is like a muscle—it grows stronger the more you use it. When doubt creeps in, practice saying this out loud: “Lord, I believe; help my unbelief.”
  • Feeling Overwhelmed or Distracted – The enemy loves to use distractions to keep you from focusing on God. If you’re finding it hard to stay consistent in prayer or meditation, try setting small, manageable goals. Start with just five minutes in the morning of quiet time with the Bible, in meditation, or in prayer, and let it grow from there.

Practical Steps to Deepen Your Connection to God by Accepting Christ

  • Surrender and Pray – Begin each day with a simple prayer, "God help me to release control. I accept Jesus into my heart today."  This act of surrender tells your nervous system that you don’t have to carry the burden alone, and it begins to relax. Studies have shown that regular prayer activates the parasympathetic nervous system, the part of your body responsible for rest and healing.
  • Meditate on Scripture – Meditating on Bible verses, especially those about peace and healing, can have a profound calming effect on the body and mind. According to a 2016 study, participants who engaged in scripture-based meditation saw a significant reduction in stress and improvement in sleep quality. Try verses like John 14:27: “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you.”  Here's a 9-Minute Guided Meditation by Ko you can use.
  • Practice Gratitude – Every evening, write down three things you’re thankful for. Gratitude shifts your focus away from fear and stress, calming the nervous system. Researchers have found that gratitude practices reduce inflammatory markers and promote restful sleep.
  • Worship Through Music – Music is powerful, and worship songs that glorify God can bring peace to your soul like nothing else. Sing, dance, or simply listen to music that invites the Holy Spirit into your heart.  Here's my morning spirit playlist.
  • Join a Faith-Based Community – Surrounding yourself with others who share your faith can bring support, encouragement, and accountability. The Bible reminds us that "where two or more are gathered," God is there, and the power of community can ease feelings of isolation, a key factor in trauma recovery.  Learn more about our online fellowship group below.
